Fault Friction During Simulated Seismic Slip Pulses

چکیده
Theoretical studies predict that during earthquake rupture faults slide at non-constant slip velocity, however it is not clear which source time functions are compatible with the high velocity rheology of faults. Here we present results from friction experiments history, employing a well-known seismic solution kinematics. The evolution in shows strong dependence on applied and parameters relevant to energetics faulting scale impulsiveness function. When comparing constitutive models strength against our experimental demonstrate fault directly controlled by temperature off fault. Flash heating predicts weakening behavior short timescales, but larger timescales better predicted viscous creep rheology. We use steady-state pulse test compatibility measurements imposed rate history stress elastodynamic equilibrium. Whilst some observed, indicates acceleration deceleration might be more rapid than experiments.

Self-healing slip pulses and the friction of gelatin gels.
We present an extensive experimental study and scaling analysis of friction of gelatin gels on glass. At low driving velocities, sliding occurs via propagation of periodic self-healing slip pulses whose velocity is limited by collective diffusion of the gel network. Healing can be attributed to a frictional instability occurring at the slip velocity V=Vc. For V>Vc, sliding is homogeneous and fr...
متن کاملThe structure of slip-pulses and supershear ruptures driving slip in bimaterial friction
The most general frictional motion in nature involves bimaterial interfaces, when contacting bodies possess different elastic properties. Frictional motion occurs when the contacts composing the interface separating these bodies detach via propagating rupture fronts. Coupling between slip and normal stress variations is unique to bimaterial interfaces. Here we use high speed simultaneous measur...
متن کاملSlip-Parallel Seismic Lineations on the Northern Hayward Fault, California
A high-resolution relative earthquake location procedure is used to image the fine-scale seismicity structure of the northern Hayward fault, California. The seismicity defines a narrow, near-vertical fault zone containing horizontal alignments of hypocenters extending along the fault zone. The lineations persist over the 15-year observation interval, implying the localization of conditions on t...
متن کاملPost-seismic and interseismic fault creep I: model description
S U M M A R Y We present a model of localized, aseismic fault creep during the full interseismic period, including both transient and steady fault creep, in response to a sequence of imposed coseismic slip events and tectonic loading. We consider the behaviour of models with linear viscous, non-linear viscous, rate-dependent friction, and rateand state-dependent friction fault rheologies. Both ...
متن کاملFrom Geodetic Imaging of Seismic and Aseismic Fault Slip to Dynamic Modeling of the Seismic Cycle
Understanding the partitioning of seismic and aseismic fault slip is central to seismotectonics as it ultimately determines the seismic potential of faults. Thanks to advances in tectonic geodesy, it is now possible to develop kinematic models of the spatiotemporal evolution of slip over the seismic cycle and to determine the budget of seismic and aseismic slip. Studies of subduction zones and ...
